Wikipedia is a website that has fascinated me ever since I discovered it several months ago. A "wiki" is a new breed of websites that are editable by anyone who visits. The resulting affect is that hundreds of people build the site together.
Wikipedia is the foremost example of a wiki in action. It is an easily-navigable, free encyclopedia with nearly half a million articles on any subject you can imagine. I link to it frequently from my blog to provide additional information about posts I have made.
As great as Wikipedia is, there has been a recent movement by many in the academic community because of it’s lack of credibility. They have a pretty good point. After all, anybody can write anything they want on it. Luckily, because of the thousands of visitors everyday to the site, most errors or imperfections do not stay around for long. But there is no system of official revisions going on at all. It’s just getting too big too quickly. I guess what the academic community is trying to say is, "Kids, don’t even think about putting Wikipedia in your bibliographies!"
